Default Worst Cover versions

As a counterpoint to the best covers thread
Here come the shockers.

A couple that spring immediately to mind.

Madonnas American Pie, Truly abysmal in every way.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkvpuOebd88

All Saints - Under the Bridge, A twee pop version of a classic song about severe heroin addiction, way to miss the point.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DA_c1o5Y95o

Sheryl Crow - Sweet child o mine
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OClYq3I4_0
I do give her some credit ofr being more tongue in cheek with her covers than the others, but its still bloody awful.

So which cover versions make you want to stick knitting needles in your ears?
Gah. Back to hte good thread for some catharsis.

The Pet Shop Boys butchered "Where the Streets Have No Name", unforgiveably.

Blasphemers! Pet Shop Boyness is next to godliness :P

Someone already put Metallica doing "Turn the Page" on the best, I would have put it here in the worst. They took a fantastic and absolutely perfect song and turned it into utter angry-rock trash, IMO.

Other than that, it's hard to think of really bad covers because ... well, because they're bad and I don't want to think about or remember them.

Oh, how about that 'tribute' to Notorious B.I.G. where most of the whole song was the music from Police's "Every Breath You Take". That was miserable.

Puff Doodly's cover of "Kashmir" I'm sure it's out there somewhere, but I'm not looking for it.

Just for Matt: The Who "My Generation" covered by Hilary Duff:

One comment on the You Tube addy reads: "THis bitch needs to be crucified. And I'll pay for it." He was generous.

I realise that the Blondie version is itself a cover, but here's how not to do this song...

there's an evil rap version of paradise city, which is evil. There's also Avril Lavigne's cover of Knockin' on Heaven's door, which is just the epitome of shit.

The Pet Shop Boys cover was superb when you put it into context.

They medleyed a rock anthem with a crappy ballad and the double-A side included the song "How can you expect to be taken seriously", which lampooned the way in which certain rock artists were turning themselves into humanitarians and were becoming very lippy about it, while it was doing their careers no harm at all.

If the intent was to take the piss out of Bono, then it was mission accomplished.

I can't access YT right now, but the Toyah Wilcox version of "Echo Beach" is pretty bad.

oh there's also Timmy Mallet's Itsy Bitsy Teeny weeny yellow Polka Dot Bikini, though perhaps that is negated by the fact that there has never been a good version of that song.

Without sound, I can't tell for sure, but I predict that the Cardigans covering Black Sabbath's Iron Man and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath will be the apotheosis of shit:

Rumours that Robert Plant was the original model for Jake the Peg proved unfounded after the foil-wrapped cucumber incident at Heathrow...

i love rolfs stairway tbh. saw him do it live at glasto 93 and it was well received considering the muso crowd. I think becasue it was always tongue in cheek rather than serious attempt at competition, but i loved what he did with it.

and yeah Hillary Duff needs to die a slow death for that one. Fuck.

Thats a good point and I'm all for anyone taking the piss out of Bono at every opportunity. I just cat stand a single thing the PSB ever did.

In fact, that reminds me i'll have to see if Bonos version of Lou Reeds Satellite of Love is around some where because that was pretty fucking bad IIRC.

Guns N' Roses did it too. I'm still not sure whether it - or Guns N' Roses for that matter - was intended as a joke, but it was total asswipe.

(I'm embarrassed typing "Guns N' Roses" in my own presence, never mind searching YouTube)
