off topic threads are supposed to be moved to a forum where they are on topic. If there is no "on topic" forum, then they usually go to either GD, TRN or TCH depending on the content.

so how do you guys go about deciding if the subject matter is 'off topic'? are there any criteria posted?

If an OP was written, a few interesting posts, but the topic drifted into another interesting topic...

Can we have the Staff move prescribed posts to another OP?

the criteria are pretty loose. for instance in this forum, which I assume is the one you are curious about, any period of history is a valid topic, though if it's modern history and has a strong political/economic flavor it might do better in Politics. When we added this forum, the cut-off point was WWII and later, but we've not tried to make that a hard and fast line.

Prehistory, archaeology, etc., are on topic here, though they are often discussed in the context of creationism/origins in the evo forum, too.

Does this help?

You can ask. if it looks like the side topic has enough legs to make an active thread, a split request would probably be honored. If the original topic never took off and the side discussion became the main theme of the thread, it's less likely that a split would be done.

the goal isn't to have crisp, clean topics, even if they are short and don't last long. It's mostly to not disturb the flow of discussion too much, and to have interesting and active threads.

That would be post WWII.

I was wondering why you posted the thread here instead of TSB
