Valuing Picasso as the greatest modernist master (which many do) is equivalent to declaring Giotto as the greatest Renaissance master (which no one does or would).

It illustrates the problem with modernist culture in general: The value is placed on apparent originality, not on quality.

So you're saying that Picasso is overrated. ok. But in what sense a "fraud"?

- In personal terms:

He consciously downgraded the quality of his art to fit the requirements of the tiny public which initially favoured the decadent anti-art movement.

He knew he was overrated but went along with the game (I am not criticizing his business sense, just pointing out it was based on fraud).

- In a historical sense:

The overrating and false discourse surrounding his art make P. a fraudulent historical object.

No, art is dream imagery (existential semiotics) in the physical scale of perception.

Out of the "cubists" (stupid term) I much prefer Braque - his late synthetic pieces are some of my favourite paintings. I don't dislike Picasso though, I like his drawing best

He invented the aesthetic; Picasso 'borrowed' it, but being an already established commercial artist got the main credit.

I much prefer Juan Gris: His compositions are much more rotund and sensuous. He invented the terminology 'analytical' and 'synthetic' to apply to the types of cubism. (I invented the third type and the terminology for it, but that is another story...).

Picasso has his good moments; he is just not what he is claimed to be.
