Default Great "Unseen" Gangster Films

Everyone knows (and hopefully loves) such gangster classics as The Godfather, Pulp Fiction etc., but what about those great gangster flicks no one talks about or maybe have never seen?

Here is my list of some worth seeing, and hopefully you can give me some I've missed!

LOVE HONOR AND OBEY

- Great funny Brit gangster film with wonderful characters.

http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=oybfiOGc_PY

HARD MEN

- Another great brit gangster film taht is funny as hell. Basically revolves around 3 friends one of which wants out of the biz when he becomes a father. Rarely seen but a GREAT film!

UNDERWORLD

- Not the vamp flick but the pretty much unknown gangster flick starring Dennis Leary. He chews up the screen in a great performance. VERY underated funny gangster flick.

BLOOD IN BLOOD OUT

Quite possibly my fave gang flick of all time! Why this isn't seen as a classic is beyond me. MUST SEE!

http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=WrGS36r75XM

AMONGST FRIENDS

- Great unknown gangster film. Rich kids becoming criminals for the foink of it. Very good.

http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=i8xIPNqreZo

THE LAST DAYS OF FRANKIE THE FLY

- Dennis Hoppers as a mob flunkie with a heart of gold. Wonderful funny engaging film worth a look if you can find it! Also with Keifer Sutherland!

DEEP COVER

- Little talked about Larry Fishburne, Jeff Goldblume crime drama that is very, very good

http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=wFQUceaB8O4

BEYOND THE LAW

- Charlie Sheen is surprisingly good as a cop infiltrating a badass motorcycle gang. With the always great Michael Madsen. based on a true story.

http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=eeDwkNTa8ug

AMERICAN ME

- Not much talk about this great Latino prison gang flick. Still great film definitely worth the time. Based loosely on a true story.

http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=bVVi7ojMP-8

A BRONX TALE

- Not totally unknown as it has De Niro in a leading role, but IMO very much underappreciated. De Niro directed this.

I consider Sexy Beast as a "known" film due to all the kudos Ben Kingsley received for his performance. great movie !

Brits do Gangster flicks right!

Also worthy of mention besides the ones everyone knows are

GANGSTER NO. 1

- Chilling lead performance from Paul Bettany with Malcolm Mcdowell.

http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=FePdUJ735aw

THE KRAYS

- About the legendary Kray brothers in 60's swingin Londaon

http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=NV0o74oshig

SHINER

- Wonderful Michael Caine performance in this way undervalued crime drama.

24 HOURS IN LONDON

- Not the best but better than it gets credit for.

And of course 2 all time classics...

King of New York was an outstanding film, but I figured it was too "known" to list here.

I assume we are counting Once Upon a Time in America as known?

" Youre a big lad but youre out of shape, for me its a full time job"
I havent see Get Carter in ages. Cool film.

Dad Savage
featuring Patrick Stewart is a class film that no one has ever heard of.

I thought Miller's Crossing was a good but not great film. It's "kinda" known by those "in the know" so to speak.

Never saw Road To Perdition as Hanks as a mobster somehow spooked me.

Sonatine- Don't even get me started on Asian gangster films! so many good ones that no one knows about it drives me nuts!

I'll add a few more.

Also from the director or Sonatine (the legendary Tikashi Kitano) was the film BROTHER, his North American English film debut. Typically great Kitano film!

STATE OF GRACE

Oft overlooked Sean Penn, Gary Oldman film looking at the Irish in Hell's kitchen.

Also from Sean Penn came the classic gangflick COLORS. It is more a "known" but still not often talked about as the great film it was.

There was a direct to vid film made as a "prequel" to the classic "Carlito's Way" called "CARLITO'S WAY RISE TO POWER" that though not as good of course, was still a good film worth a look.

Brian Dennehy did a great job in "TEAMSTER BOSS", the film biography of Jackie Presser Jr. of Teamster notoriety. Stays pretty close to the true story.
